EKA - however under another name "HADAR HALLSTRÖM'S KNIFE FACTORY, LTD" - was founded back in 1882 by Hadar Hallström in Sweden, who this year began producing the first knives. In 1917, John Elmquist took over the company, the development and production of the knives, and it was here that EKA got its current name. For many years after the takeover, John Elmquist, along with many other knife manufacturers, went through some difficult years from around 1930 to the end of the 19th century. However, John managed to get EKA adapted to the different situations in the best possible way over the years, so that they could keep their heads above water. Meanwhile, in 1946, engineer Thorbjörn Evrell arrived, who quickly saw that the only way they could stay on the market was to rationalize and renew their products. Therefore, many of their existing models were discontinued while their survival models were improved. In this way, their pocket knives became hugely popular worldwide, and EKA remained afloat.
